Average night in

This was really an excuse to use the new lens.

BATH TIME! The kids love taking a bath together.

How cute is this view?!?!

PLAY TIME!

She soooo looks up to her brother. The look in her eyes and the way she follows him...

When she gets tired, she will briefly lay down like this.

Do you like my hat?!?!

Just a Tuesday

Hey - look who has a ponytail!

Want to see that a little closer?

While Abby was attacking my camera, Grant read Goodnight Moon about 16 times. It's his favorite book. He knows the entire book. He'll even open up other books and start in with "In the great green room, there was a telephone and a red balloon. And a picture of..." and he proceeds to recite about 3-4 more pages.

Abby actually wanted to be rocked to sleep tonight. So for the second night in a row, she fell asleep on her daddy. Awwww.

Walk it out

We've been taking nightly walks around our neighborhood. We're taking advantage of the cooler spring weather before summer sneaks up on us! Grant loves it and will tell us he wants to go outside for a walk. After 20 minutes, he starts asking to come home. Abby likes it just fine so long as she is in the carrier and not her car seat.
Just about every night, Abby dozes off and becomes dead weight for the last half of the walk. Last night was no exception.

Weekend of fun

Clara was sick on Friday, so I kidnapped my babies for a bonus 3-day weekend!

We played on Friday and made a trip to the park. I got a few shots of the kiddos (will update later). Abby got tired and cried so much that she stopped taking her paci, so we headed home. She fell asleep in the 60 seconds it takes us to drive home from the park. This is remarkable because she HATES the car and pretty much always screams cries when we're driving - she's slept in the car maybe twice ever.

Friday night we ate at an actual RESTAURANT with our 2 little ones and it went REALLY well. Abby slept 10 hours that night - she didn't get up until 7 AM!

Saturday we dropped off Derek's car for an oil change then headed over to the Crow Center because they were having children's activities and it was FREE. It was a total failure. Abby was hungry as soon as we arrived. I brought a bottle, but it was cold so she refused it. I took her to the bathroom thinking there'd be a lounge area, but there wasn't. I somehow maneuvered myself into a folded up wheelchair (with abnormally high arm rests) and nursed Abby there (again, requiring some contorting of her body to work around the arm rests). Grant did one craft with Derek and then had enough. I had packed a picnic for us, so we ate at a park, then picked up Derek's car. It was a lot of work for the brief outing and Grant was probably too young to really enjoy any of it. But it was free and different, so we'll call it a wash.

I spent the afternoon cooking as much as possible. Derek helped a lot too. I kept asking him to do things (will you wash these dishes? will you tear apart these 3 rotissery chickens? will you open these cans? etc.) and he never complained. Even better - the kids were pretty cooperative while we were both in the kitchen. We have enough food for at least 2 weeks now!

We had dinner, drinks and game night with Cy and Emily (and their 10 month old, Nathaniel) on Saturday. That may sound lame, but it really was a blast! Ever since I made chicken nuggets last week, I've been wanting them again. So we had them for dinner and they were a hit! We stayed up super late (I went to bed at midnight). But NO ONE in the house woke up before 7 AM, so it worked out just fine!

Sunday we met up with Carla at a park in Desoto for Abby's 3 month pictures. She has already posted several - here's a sample of my favorites.

I love this shot! We are both so happy!

Grant and I rockin' our new boots - his are John Deere of course.

We then drove home and Grant fell asleep 10 minutes from the house. Awful. The boy wouldn't nap once we got home. Around 2, we headed over to Zach & Audrey's. We met them in our Childbirth Class - their boy is just a few weeks older than Grant. Grant was a little off (he fell asleep on the way over there), so he didn't like their dog Chompers but everything else was fun. Fajitas, 'ritas and 2 boys playing nice with each other. All in all a great Sunday night! The icing on the cake? Abby slept until 7 AM again!!

Our weekends are now a series of play dates - mostly so we can have some good adult conversation without destroying local establishments. I genuinely love it and don't miss the days when we ate out all the time or stayed up well past midnight. Watching our kids be silly with each other - and even cry/whine when a new playmate takes a favorite toy - is FAR better than our evenings in our DINK days (double income, no kids).

Abby is on a roll - 10 hours, 10 hours, and 11 hours - 3 nights in a row! We're turning a corner in our house! 2 kids that sleep through the night and are often down for the same nap time. We will relish it while it lasts - already dreading the day when Grant stops napping. But for now we're getting lots of sleep and enjoying as much of this spring time weather as possible!

So - who wants to have a play date?!

Big Boy Bed

On Sunday Grant moved into his new room and into his big boy bed. How has he done in the new room and new bed?! Pretty much a perfect transition (I know - now I'm really tempting fate). He played in the room during the day while we were putting the last of the gear away, so he was comfortable with the layout. He really loved playing on the bed!

Derek says he went to sleep without making a sound on Sunday night. I was having dinner with friends, so I'll have to take his word for it!

A few things we did (notes to myself for when Abby makes the transition):

1. All toys are out of reach. Grant can't open the closet and can't reach anything on his bookshelf.

2. Elmo book - We read a book for several days about Elmo moving to a big bed. I have no idea if he "got" it or not.

3. Skipped a second nap. Sometimes Grant needs a second nap, but we skipped it on Sunday so he'd be extra tired and more willing to go to sleep at bed time.

4. COMPLETE DARKNESS. Grant had a night light from about 0-4 months. It was mostly for our convenience. After that, the night light went out and we never replaced it. He is comfortable sleeping in the dark (which helps in so many ways - he's quite portable)!

5. He can't open the door! Even if he tried to escape, he'd be stuck!!

He seems to really like his room. He knows to go there for bed now instead of the nursery. Last night he played in there quite contently (climbing in and out of a suitcase we'd gotten out to pack hospital bags) while I hung up all the new size 2T clothes from my sister (25 short sleeve shirts and 50 long sleeve shirts - I counted!).

I've checked on him every night and there's only been one mis-hap. On Wednesday when I went to check on him, he was actually on the ground next to the bed. Sound asleep with his monkey close by. I put him back in bed and he didn't even wake up.

Every morning when I go to check on him, he is sitting on his bottom on his bed. Usually repeating "Na no nah" (which translates to "Hi Lola"). It's such a sweet sight and such a sweet sound!

I'm glad my boy is getting into this routine now. Abby will no doubt shake this up a bit and will probably wake him while she is tiny and needs night-time feedings and cuddles. LESS THAN 2 WEEKS!!

8 am

We woke up at 8am today. The whole house. Just wanted to jot this down so I remember what life was like before Abby in a few weeks.

Here Comes the Sandman

I just love that everytime I sing "Sandman," Grant gets calm and quiet. Before I get to "tips of his toes," he is calm. If he's talkative or a pacifier isn't near, sometimes he'll talk all the way through the song the first time. This lullaby has worked magic in my family for generations. My mom sang it to me and my siblings; Big Gaga sang it to all 12 of babies; and Big Gaga's mother sang it to her. I don't think it's recorded anywhere; at least not the way we sing it. I did find the sheet music months ago online. My friend Cassie played it on her iPhone piano and I called my mom so she could hear. Oh - and I cried.

One of the first things I wanted to do when I got home from the hospital with Grant was to learn this lullaby, and I'm so glad I did. In a family full of rich traditions, this is the one I'm most thankful for. Other traditions that I'm thankful for (in no particular order):

1. The dress the babies wear coming home from the hospital. Grant was the 47th to wear the gown.

2. The Purple Dress

3. Go Tell It on the Mountain

4. Big Gaga's trains and stockings. Grant will wear the conductor hat for the first time this year!

5. Making Christmas stockings. Big Gaga has made them for her entire family. My mom has made them for hers as well. And even though it has taken well over 100 hours, I have finished Grant's! I just have to add his name!! There was a time when the Bereuter family grew by several people in a single year. I remember Gaga rattling off the newbies, us cousins help her make the new stockings, and Gaga worrying if she'd missed somebody.

6. The Easter Egg Hunt. And the 40 or so dozen confetti eggs all made by my mother.
