Halloween

I found a Halloween costume on Pinterest that I just couldn't resist!! Here's my inspiration:

The original characters:

And the final product:

Russell and Carl Fredricksen from UP!

I'm supposed to be the bird, Kevin.

I thought I should take advantage of Halloween 2011 because after this year, Grant may start to have an opinion about his costume. Oh - and I probably won't have time to make it either.

I love that the "badges" are old buttons that Derek had in the attic. The Alf "badge" for being a Party Animal, and of course the Ninja Turtles and Cap'n Crunch badges. Probably better than any REAL boy scout badge!

We trick or treated at Art and Sandy's ("Mimi") with Nathaniel and Clara.

I tried to get a shot of the boys. This is the best one. Julie - "Nathaniel, say 'candy'." Nathaniel - "CANDY!!!!"
Photobucket

After that, we headed to Big Gaga's. Grant was a happy camper chewing playing with the stacking rings!
Photobucket

Grant fell asleep on the way home.

This was our first Halloween as a family. Last year we were at the World Series and Grant was with Donnie and Susan! Sidenote - I can't believe the Rangers went to the World Series TWO years in a row!! I can't be upset over the loss since the Rangers handed it over to the Cards. We had fun this year, and I can't wait to add another munchkin to our trick-or-treating bunch next year! I need to start planning soon!

BOO!!

Last week's craft project at Miss Julie's? Matching ghost T-shirts!!
Photobucket

Clara had a Halloween bow, but she didn't really want to wear it.
Photobucket

Once she got it off, she tried to attack me!
Photobucket

Listen, Clara - I wasn't the one putting that bow on you - that's your mama's fault!! Don't attack me!!

The boys said "cheese" and showed us how big they are!

Prepping the House for Abigail - New Guest Room

We're prepping the house for Abby! I thought getting ready for Baby #1 was a lot of work. I was wrong. Baby #2 is MUCH more work! Not only do you have to rearrange rooms/closets, you have to keep a toddler entertained while you do it. And no - you can't just have ice cream for dinner when you're tired from working all day. That toddler has to eat!!

We've done a lot in rearranging rooms. The room that made the most progress this weekend is the guest room/office (formerly exclusively the office). It may seem that Grant's room or Abby's nursery is more important to finish. But really if Abby comes tomorrow, she'd be fine in the co-sleeper and Grant could stay in the crib. What's REALLY important is to have space for my mama to stay when Abby arrives!!

Here's what the room looked like before:
Oh yeah - I don't have a photo. Imagine 2 large desks, dingy white/yellow walls, a bookcase and a dog crate. Beautifully framed degrees. And imagine an utter mess on each desk. We kept the door closed to that room and never gave it another thought.

In the past few weeks, We sold 2 desks and 1 bookcase on Craigslist. We turned around and spent that on a new, compact desk that will hide all sorts of goodies! We waited for a good sale and snagged this puppy for 25% off. It still makes my heart go pitter-patter! Derek had to talk me out of this desk. While I love the white wood and the larger file cabinet, I despise the price tag. Plus, with the darker wood, we can move this piece into our bedroom if we want to at a later date.

We needed a smaller bed to accomodate the new combo of guestroom and office. So we handed down our old queen size bed, and we were given this wonderful full size bed from Derek's Grandpa! They also gave us the matching night stand and armoire!! (The whole set will one day be Abby's big girl room.)
Photobucket

My father-in-law drove over 800 miles this weekend to bring this to us from Arkansas. He's pretty much the BEST father-in-law ever! Seriously though - sometimes we wonder if he's going for sainthood.

We hired painters and went with gray walls. Derek was scared of the dark gray I had chosen, but the white furniture really brightens it up!

I picked up the bedding and lampshade at IKEA. I think I need one accent pillow, so I'm waiting to find that for a steal. No rush though - I'll just lurk at Tuesday Morning.

As for the walls, I wanted to move out the typical office decorations (degrees and my law license) and replace them with something more fun and more us!

I have saved Playbills over the years - not to every single show, but to most of them! I thought it'd be fun to have a wall of Playbills, but framing them was REALLY expensive because of their custom size. I asked my cousin Lynette for tips because she's the crafty type, and she recommended getting a mat cutter. Again IKEA came through for the frames (BTW - definitely the cheapest place to buy frames. Don't even bother with coupons to Hobby Lobby/Michaels or the buy-one-get-one-for-a-penny at Aaron's Brothers). I've got the frames and Playbills, but still need to cut the mats and hang them up.

So one wall will be very ME - another wall should be very DEREK. My plan is to make use of the mat cutter again and frame some sports memorabilia:

*Tickets from the NCAA Rose Bowl Championship (Hook 'em);
*Tickets from the last Monday night game at Texas Stadium (a back and forth battle with the Eagles - the good guys came out on top though);
*Tickets to a Monday night game at Cowboys Stadium (where Romo broke his collar bone in the second quarter - ending his season last year);
*Tickets from Grant's first Rangers game; and
*Mementos from Game 4 of the 2010 World Series (tickets were electronic).

For behind the bed, I found a simple idea on pinterest - covering a blank canvas with fabric! I have the large canvas but I'm still on the look out for the right fabric. Again - I don't have to rush this - just keeping my eyes open.

I did want to add one big purchase to this room - a TV. It sounds crazy, but to me, it makes a guest room complete! We found a TV and saved some $ by not hooking it up to cable. We picked up a TV on Saturday (while I was having those crazy contractions). It was already on sale, but then today it dropped in price again. Derek and Grant went to Best Buy today for the difference and were just in time for the power to go out. A simple trip to get cash back turned into a half-hour ordeal with a toddler. God bless him!
Photobucket Future TV wall

This room was pretty expensive - Desk + TV + frames and mats + mat cutter + canvas and fabric + bedding + painters + more tupperware storage for closet + new printer because the old one was too wide to fit in the new desk - Craigslist income from old desks = around $500. The other rooms are MUCH cheaper (it's not even close), so that makes this splurge a little easier. I'll update with the fully decorated room and of course the new rooms for the kiddos in the coming weeks.

Yesterday I was having back pain all day. It wasn't just uncomfortable. It was pain that doesn't go away. I laid in bed, took multiple baths, but nothing was working to alleviate the pain.

We canceled our plans to go to Matt and Anna's Halloween party. This is a big deal - I've been working on our costumes for the past month!! Just in case I was in labor, I didn't eat anything after lunch.

My sis sent me a text about delivering the toddler bed for Grant. I ended up asking her to come over and stay with Grant so Derek and I could go to the hospital to be checked. I texted Nurse Lolly with all my details. I'm terrible at telling if I'm having contractions, but I know I was having some. Lolly thought the hospital trip was a good idea too.

So after showers and packing, we headed to the hospital. I was quite sure I wasn't delivering. But I wanted to have peace of mind.

We got to the hospital and went to triage to be monitored. My contractions were 2-4 minutes apart. I had no change in my cervix though (not dilated), so that was good news! The nurse asked 500 questions, then called my doc. The doc didn't like me having such intense contractions so frequently when I have a scar on my uterus (from the prior C) and because it's still too early to deliver. The doc ordered tributaline and oral hydration. I then had to be monitored for about 2 hours. Derek worked in a nap.

The tributaline did the trick - the contractions slowed and lessened in intensity. We were sent home around midnight, grabbed some Whataburger taquitos and came home!

I don't think I could have slept at all if we didn't go to the hospital - the pain was just too intense. I'm glad we went to the hospital! I'll have a follow up visit with my OB this week.

A big thanks to my favorite sister for taking care of my little man!!

All done!

Yesterday for the first time ever, Grant said (and signed) "All done!" He's never done this before, which I attributed to the fact that he's NEVER done eating! Maybe we're turning over a new leaf. Not that I'm complaining about his healthy appetite. I love that he eats anything and everything!

Every morning on the way to Miss Julie's, I point at the cows. I tell Grant they are cows and they say "Moo." So this morning, I'm going through my routine and he interrupts with "cow". So I asked him what a cow says and he said "mooooooo". He's done this with books at home, but never with the real cows!

Mirror, mirror on the wall

We are prepping the house for Abby, which means we're moving rooms and furniture around. Two weeks ago, painters came to paint our new guest room (grey) and change the nursery from blue to pink. They also painted our hallway - it went from an off-white yellowish tone to a beige. Derek doesn't see much of a difference, but I think it's great!

We got rid of the rinky-dink Walmart mirror that was in the hallway and got a new, fabulous and extra large mirror from Ikea. We hung it last night. I swoon everytime I walk by - because of what it does for the hallway people, not because I'm THAT vain.
Photobucket

It's level, despite the fact that it may not look that way at the bottom right. In reality, the door frame to the nursery is not straight. An imperfection that will just have to remain.

More on the prepping the house to come...

Fun at Ms. Julie's

Grant has been having a great time at Miss Julie's! They do fun things like play at the park and the Ark (indoor park), color and do crafts.

Last week they baked and Julie sent us home with goodies.
This week, Derek had an errand to run so Grant stayed late at Miss Julie's. In the extra time he was there, he got a bath and a manicure - oh - and dinner. I never realized her house was a baby spa.

Tuesdays are extra special. My aunt Sandy ("Mimi") comes over. So far, Tuesdays have involved special crafts. Not surprising AT ALL if you know Super Sandy. My response to the photo below was "How did you get him to sit still without food?" Craft will be revealed in another post!

The answer - Nathaniel. Grant and Nathaniel are already bonding. Nathaniel asks about him in the morning and Grant wants to do everything just like Nathaniel. It's oh-so-sweet and I think they'll be like brothers in no time (if they aren't already).

Grant clearly loves it over there. This morning I was going to slip out while Grant was distracted by the play kitchen. But when I headed to the door, Grant ran after me saying "mmmmmmmmmm" and then gave me a big kiss "MUAH". After that he practically yelled "Bye bye" and Nathaniel joined in too. I could hear them saying "bye bye" even after I shut the door to leave.

Sprinkle for Abby

Today my friends gathered to "sprinkle" Abby with all things pink and lacy and girly. Rach hosted the get together and we were joined by Judy, my mom, sis, Anna, Cat, and Lolly. Here's a peak at Abby's loot.

First up - a wreath for our room at the hospital! This will also probably be hung in Abby's room.

These are all from Rach. From her etsy shop, twenty9freckles. The Rangers gear will fit Abby next season!!
These outfits were fully accessorized. From my mom (on the ends) and Anna - hats, socks,
Lolly described these outfits as "Jersey Shore". I absolutely love them! The outfit on the left is from Judy - it barely qualifies as "Jersey Shore"-ish but made the cut because it includes animal print!
And if we're lucky, Abby will sleep well in these pretty PJ's:

Cat's sister-in-law has twin girls. One girl was always a little bigger than the other. Our girls will SHOULD be 2 months apart, so Abby gets the bigger size of these Best Friends tops. Baby Shep will sport the smaller size!

Cat also got Abby her first pair of ballet slippers. I LOVE that these are Bloch. As in, REAL ballet slippers and not the cute baby knock offs!
And in all of this, Grant was not forgotten. His Aunt Carrie made sure of that! We tried to get him to model his new "Big Brother" tee.
Photobucket

He wasn't really into it. But he did say CHEESE for us a few minutes later:

And since I'm on the subject of clothes, here's a few other new pieces of clothes for Abby. Christmas clothes thanks to a Macy's gift card and a hand-me-down from Clara (from Vicki)on the right:
Again, Grant was not forgotten. He has a new Christmas outfit too:

And an irresistible pink polka dot tutu with matching bloomers with ruffles! This will look great with Abby's new ballet slippers!
I'm so thankful for my friends celebrating this baby and the day was absolutely perfect! Thanks so much Rach for putting it all together!

State Fair of Texas

Last night, we headed down to Red Oak. We've had plans for - oh - at least 6 months - to go to the state fair on Saturday. The plan was for Grant to play at Grandma Rose and Papa's, while Derek and I went to the fair. We have had tickets to see West Side Story with Matt and Anna, which is playing this year during the fair. So we were planning to eat our weight in fried food, then veg out during the musical.

We got there a little too early - before much of anything was open. But the face painting was open!! Derek talked about how funny it would be to get a butterfly painted on his face. I tried SO HARD to get him to do that, but he decided to be reasonable instead.

We strolled through the children's area of the midway. I was surprised that many of the rides had a height minimum of 32 inches. Grant is 32.5 inches without shoes, so he probably could have ridden some of them. But there is no WAY he would have lasted all day! The musical didn't end until 5pm.

We met up with the Arnolds at the State Fair. Lane and Derek can go toe to toe when it comes to eating. But Lolly and I weren't there just to watch them! Our babies were begging for nachos.
We took a ride in the Skyway.

Derek conquered all of the following fried foods between 10am and 1pm:
*Honey cinnamon sugar fried butter
*Fried pineapple upside down cake
*Fried nutter butter
*Mama's fried sweet potato pie
*Fried Oreo cookie
*El bananarito (Derek's fav)
*Buffalo chicken in a flapjack
*Snickerdoodle and choc chip cookie with mint choc chip ice cream (not fried, but made the list)
*Fried s'mores - HEAVENLY!! It was my fave by far.

Derek was so full from that that he didn't even mooch off of my nachos or corn dog.

We also met up with Meadow, who insisted that we take the standard Big Tex photo. So glad she did!!

Grant had more fun in Red Oak than he would have had at the State Fair. He played HARD outside most of the day. His favorite toy? The smallest of the John Deere toys. He can get on and off of it by himself now. He can also say "Rose" and "Papa" pretty clearly.
We got this email during the musical. Further proof that Grant LOVES to play in Lola's crate. The title of the email? Nap time.
And the kids were POOPED on the way home!

Grant is learning!!

Grant has been learning a lot in the past few months.

*Hygiene - If you ask him if he wants to brush his teeth, he’ll run to the bathroom. In fact, he hates brushing his teeth but loves standing on the step stool on his tip toes and putting his hand under the running water. Then (and only then) will he say “Ahhh” and open his mouth for me! After a bath when I comb his hair, he takes a turn with the comb and gives it a shot. Most of the time, the comb is upside down, but I still think he does a good job.

*Doors - His latest fascination is with doors. He loves to close them. In the past, he liked doing this whenever he could PUSH the door shut, but now he will push or pull it shut. Imagine a little boy on his tip toes, barely able to hold the door handle, backing up to pull the door closed. Apparently it's also really fun to play with locks because he's locked us out of our room a few times (and locked everyone out of Matt and Julie's bedroom over the weekend - he wasn't even in the room). He almost always says "Bah-Bye" when he shuts the door - usually AFTER it is shut. And when we have visitors, he says "bah-bye" AFTER they have left. If he wants a door opened after he's closed it, he knocks on the door.

*Body parts - He now knows his hands, ears, hair, nose, toes, belly button, and baby (his tummy and mine). He also knows “Daddy’s toes” and “Mama’s toes” but won’t point out any of our other body parts.

*Light switches – He’s not QUITE as fascinated with light switches – but still thinks they are pretty cool.

*Toys – He has known “ball” for a while. But you can now ask him to get his fire truck or choo choo train and he’ll go get them. Same for books. The train is definitely his favorite toy. It’s not even close. He knows who Elmo is – we have 1 Elmo toy and a few books, but I don’t think he’s ever seen Sesame Street. He calls him “Melmo”.

*Songs – At least once a day, I sing Old McDonald. I usually say he “had a baby”. And Grant will say “Bay-bee” back to me. If I instead say he “had a cow”, Grant will usually still say “Bay-bee.”

*Animals – If the moons align just right, he’ll say turtle. He will say “moo” for a cow. I make a chomping sound and open and close my mouth for alligator – Grant thinks this is funny. He tries to do it too, but the sound is only a whisper.

*Lola – He’s actually pretty nice to her. I will GUSH over him every time he’s nice to her. There’s still the occasional leg-squeezing or ear-grabbing, but not as often. He’s much better about petting her with an open palm and even giving her kisses – which Lola usually returns. And clearly, that is the funniest thing ever! Just this morning while I was chopping up a cantaloupe, Grant said “nah-no-na”, which we think is “Hi Lola”, and gave her a hug and was petting her when I checked to make sure he was being sweet. Call me crazy, but I can tell by the tone of his voice and/or the look in his eyes if he’s going to be loving or mischievous with her.

*Kisses – If I ask for a kiss, I’ve got maybe a 20% chance of getting it. Except when Grant’s in his car seat – I always get kisses then. But if I ask him to give the baby a kiss, he’ll oblige 100% of the time. And sometimes, he’ll just come up to me and reach and I know he wants to give “the baby” a kiss. Sometimes, he then wants me to kiss his belly. And who can resist that?! So – yeah, he’s still very unclear on the difference in “baby” and “belly” but he’s sweet and it’s adorable!

*Dada - Grant grabs the remote and says "Dada." Thankfully, you can just ask him to bring it to you and he does. Hopefully this means the days are very near when I can say "Will you go get ____ and bring it to mama?" and he will. He also says "Dada" when he sees a burnt orange shirt (Derek wears his UT NCAA Championship shirt around the house often).

*Sleep – He’s sleeping from 8 p.m. – 6:45 a.m. Now that he’s at Julie’s, he’s taking 2 naps a day instead of just 1, totaling about 3 hours of naps.

*Mornings – When he wakes up in the mornings, he doesn’t really cry. He talks to himself and plays in his crib. I let him be until around 7. He has some really funny conversations with himself. Actually, he talks to himself quite a bit at night too once we put him in his crib.

*Lola’s crate – This is his second favorite toy behind the train. He loves to play in it and open and shut it. We had the crate in our bathroom earlier in the week and it was MUCH easier to get ready in the mornings because he just played in Lola’s crate!

*Kitchen - Grant is getting taller and more curious. He likes to reach INTO drawers (this is new for us) and can reach the kitchen countertops too. We have to watch where we set down the knife when we're cooking and where we store the scissors in the drawer! He's also curious about what is in the oven and likes to bang on it when it's in use. He also knows that when the microwave goes off, it's time to EAT! So he'll RUN to his chair... and heaven forbid you have to cut up the food or let it cool before he can eat it - he'll run to you and cry. He STILL takes eating very seriously and hasn't encountered many foods that he doesn't like. He also seems to like ice, so he's got that in common with Lola! In the kitchen (and other places too - but most often the kitchen), he likes to run into our legs and try to get through them.

*Repeating mama and dada - When we yell "GO RANGERS!" He also yells "GO!" He makes a nice big "O" with his mouth that is so adorable. He even turns and looks at the TV and yells "GO" during football too - picking up on our enthusiasm for the game. In the car today, I asked if he could say "Papa" and he said it quite clearly. Derek started saying "wiggle, wiggle, wiggle" yesterday and Grant will repeat it right back. Melts my heart.

Our first meeting with Abby...

We have a date set for the day that we'll meet Abby (a/k/a "birthday"). Abby is scheduled to make her debut Thursday, December 1st. The C-Section is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. That means Derek and I need to be there at 11:30 a.m. and I can't eat anything after midnight. Based on how things went last time, I think I'll be out of recovery and into my own room around 4 p.m.

Of course, little girls have been known to make their own schedules. We'll be ready for her whenever she comes and welcome our family and friends to come and meet her any time! If you'd like to see her first bath, measurements, and all the fun stuff they do in the nursery, you are welcome at the hospital to watch all of that from the window - however, you won't see me or be able to hold sweet Abby until we're out of recovery around 4 p.m. I really do love having visitors!!

According to the first sono, Grant was born at 40 weeks, 4 days (although my doc used my LMP to determine a due date that was 5 days before the sono date). Abby will be 39 weeks, 4 days based on the first sono if she cooks until December 1.

I think it's pretty neat that my 2 babies will be EXACTLY 18 months apart!

We can't wait to meet her!! We've been working to prepare the house (updates coming soon), and we have a plan in place for Grant so that he's taken care of while we're in the hospital.

Pumpkin Patch

Today we went to the pumpkin patch. We really got to break in the new camera. I'm still learning how to use it, and I think I'll be learning for a LONG time!

Grant liked running around the pumpkin patch. We got there right when they opened, so we were the only ones there and he could (and did) run around like he owned the place.
Photobucket
Photobucket

We tried a few posed shots:

But his favorite was watching the animals. Derek had to peel him away from watching the horses!

And the usual big batch-o-pumpkins:

Socks and shoes

Grant really doesn't like socks or shoes. He takes them off as soon as he can. At daycare, he would eat, then immediately take them off - before they went outside to play!

And in the car - same story. He takes them off as soon as possible. Exhibit A -
Photobucket

He prefers to play outside barefoot too. He often has black feet - just like a little boy should!

Coppell Oak Fest

We went to Coppell's Oak Fest today. It was our first time there, so we weren't sure what to expect. We found corn dogs, funnel cakes and sarsaparilla. We brought a blanket to lay out on, but it was definitely not a "sit and take it in" event. We'll know for next time!

Matt and Nathaniel met us out there. Before they got there, Grant got to run off some energy. Also, since it was about 90 degrees (in the middle of OCTOBER!), I tried to keep him safe from the sun.
Photobucket

The wagon was a good idea because our mischievous boy wanted to run around and play with generators or some other equipment he shouldn't get into. Have I mentioned this boy (like Lola) loves to eat ice? Dada shared from his sarsaparilla.
Photobucket
Photobucket

I think Grant and Nathaniel enjoyed the playground more than anything.
Going down the slide (nice hair Grant):

Grant's favorite was the wheel - he loves to drive!
Photobucket

And just as we were leaving, Matthew and Uncle Steve came and found us!

After Oak Fest, we headed over to Matt and Julie's for some poker, pizza and Rangers. Grant managed to lock their bedroom door with no one inside. We wrapped up poker early because we were all so tired. And the Rangers won the ALCS!
